Description:
EMS personnel overwhelmingly agree that their training in death and death notifications is inadequate. The need for training in death notification has been acknowledged since the mid-90s while EMS providers continue to confess discomfort and a lack of training in the delivery of death notifications. Responders must recognize their professional duties on the scene of a patient’s death and have the skills to interact with bereaved families. This 2 hour CME session, approved for National Core Content, will cover when and how it is appropriate for EMS providers to notify the family regarding the death of a patient.
The following will be covered:
- Introduction
- The lead up
- Grief and sudden unexpected death
- Delivering the death notification
- Supporting survivors
- Helpful/hurtful phrases
- Cultural diversity and grief
Intended Audience: EMS, ALS, BLS, First Responder field personnel
COVID: Please bring a mask. Hand sanitizer will be provided.
