Description:
This 90 Hour Pre-Certification course is a component of the certification process outlined by the Connecticut Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services for an active EMS provider to achieve certification as an Emergency Medical Services Instructor.
Course Type:
This course will be a combination of in-class lectures, distributive learning, homework assignments, and student lead class presentations. As a hybrid course, students will be expected to complete a portion of the required course hours using the distributive/online learning management system.
Course Completion:
Students should be aware that completion of this course is simply the first step in completing the requirements toward their EMS-I. Students will receive a course completion certificate.
The following is required to become fully certified as an EMS-I:
- The applicant must demonstrate a grade of 90% or higher on an EMT-Refresher examination in the last 12 months.
- The applicant must log at least 25 hours of student teaching time under currently certified Emergency Medical Services Instructors.
- The applicant must submit two letters of recommendation from 2 currently certified Emergency Medical Services Instructors.
- Participants may apply to complete student instruction hours with the Stratford EMS Training & Education Center (SEMSTEC) team as availability of courses allow or may arrange to complete their teaching hours with other EMS Instructors elsewhere.
- Once all requirements are completed, participants must submit their certification application to OEMS.
- All EMS courses must be approved by the Connecticut Department of Public Health and must meet course-specific requirements set by the Department.
25 hours of Student teaching requirements must include (not included as part of course)
- Development and use of lesson plans
- Following, and understanding objectives (Affective, Cognitive, and Psychomotor)
- Teaching in the following areas: a. small group sessions b. direct classroom (large group) instruction c.Student-centered teaching methodology
- Psychomotor instruction and evaluation
- Student remediation
***Prerequisites: Connecticut Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services EMT certification or higher for greater than 24 months experience within the last 36 months.***
Intended Audience: EMT, Paramedic with minimum 24 months field experience within the last 36 months
