Stratford EMS is proud to offer Defensive Tactics 4 EMS/Fire – Escaping Violent Encounters to ensure that our providers can operate safely on scenes and with difficult patients.

Description: In real pre-hospital situations, crisis creates chaotic rage, insulin shock overcomes reason, mentally challenged act on delusions, substance abuse enables superhuman strength, and career criminals lash out at responders even as they are engaged in life-saving efforts.  EVE4EMS/Fire  gives responders the ability to recognize a developing threat of assault, deflect it if possible, escape if practicable, and to defend if necessary.  We utilize a combination of disciplines bringing a potent combination of techniques into one comprehensive training course.

About the Instructors:

Michael A. Loiz: Mike is the Director of EMS at SEMS and has over 30 years working in the CT EMS system.  He is a Paramedic, EMS-Instructor and also teaches the NAEMT EMS Safety Course which pairs nicely with DT4EMS.  Mike is also a public safety consultant with national exposure and a special interest in customer service techniques for EMS which is an important part of the DT4EMS program.  Mike has an avid interest in all forms of martial arts with some experience in Japanese Karate, Traditional Tang Su Do, Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do.

Christopher LaCava:Chris is an EMT at SEMS and has over 35 years of experience in martial arts, particularly in Traditional Hapkido, Kuhapdo (Sword), Filipino Martial Arts, as well as Hock Hochheim’s Force Necessary. He travels the country teaching martial arts, defense tactics, eastern medicine, and emergency medicine on his yearly “Beat’Em & Treat’Em Tour.” Chris is currently pursuing credentialing as an EMS-Instructor. Chris is also an Licensed Acupuncturist with extensive knowledge in eastern medicine techniques.

It is important to understand that DT4EMS is NOT a martial arts course and you DO NOT need any martial arts experience to take the course. DT4EMS is an EMS crew safety course and as such, concepts on how to prevent assaults against responders AND how to properly defend against an assault (should it become necessary) and escape, will be taught.
