Think ‘FAST’ to deal with strokes
by Michael A. Loiz, Director of EMS
Since January of this year, Stratford EMS has responded to more than 140 incidences for possible “strokes.” Approximately seven million Americans, 20 years of age or older, have had a stroke. Strokes can happen at any age, but approximately 25% of strokes occur in people under 65 years of age.
Strokes happen when there is a lack of blood flow to the brain. Strokes can cause permanent and life changing disabilities. Increasing public awareness of stoke risk factors and symptoms is crucial in supporting public health and safety.
Think “Safety First” to reduce the risk of stroke. Some of the risk factors for stroke are:
• High Blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Heart disease
• Smoking
• Heavy alcohol use
• Physical inactivity and obesity
• Atrial Fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)
• Family history of stroke
Be alert to help. Symptoms are sudden and may include:
• Severe headache without known cause
• Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
• Dizziness, difficulty walking or loss of balance/coordination
• Confusion and trouble speaking and/or understanding
• Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
When you see these — act F.A.S.T.
Face — uneven smile or facial droop
Arms — arm numbness or weakness
Speech — slurred speech, difficulty speaking or understanding
Time — Call 911, stay calm and answer all the dispatcher’s important questions
Remember, every minute counts. Stroke is a serious emergency and can strike at any time. The F.A.S.T. test can help you identify the warning signs of stroke and take action.
